(UPDATE) PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will attend the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in the United States in September, Malacañang said Wednesday.
Palace Press Officer Claire Castro confirmed that Marcos will join other world leaders for the event, which will start on Sept. 23 in New York City.
Castro said that details of the President’s agenda in his speaking engagements in New York would be announced in the coming days.
The 80th session of the UNGA will open on Sept. 8, while the High-level Week, when heads of state and government deliver their addresses, will run from Sept. 22 to 30.

The UNGA is the main legislative, policymaking body of the UN, where leaders meet to discuss international issues covered by the UN Charter.
The Assembly meets in yearly regular sessions from September to December, where they discuss specific issues through dedicated agenda items or sub-items, which lead to the adoption of resolutions.The Philippines is one of the original 51 charter members that created the United Nations in 1945.
In 2022, Marcos delivered the country’s national statement during the UNGA high-level general debate, which marked his debut on the world stage as the country’s head of state.
The President called on UN member states to support the Philippines’ bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council, reiterating that the country was “a friend to all and an enemy to none.”

In 2023 and 2024, Marcos skipped the UNGA. He was represented by former Foreign Affairs secretary Enrique Manalo.
